Moving to Mexico – The Eggertsen Family

We are an entrepreneurial, homeschooling family with 3 children (ages 4, 7, 10) that love adventuring and exploring! We currently live in Southern Utah but are so excited to be moving to San Miguel de Allende in September.

Prior to getting married 11 years ago David and I, (Melissa) had each lived abroad. David spent 2 years in France and Switzerland and I lived in Vienna, Austria for 8 months. For me, traveling has always been a way of life. I had visited 29 countries by the time I was 18 years old and spent most of my summers in my youth visiting developing countries working with volunteer organizations to help alleviate poverty internationally. (My mother was on the Board for several of these organizations). David served a 2-year mission for our church in France and Switzerland when he was 19 years old which opened his eyes to a lifestyle of living internationally. From the time we were first married, we have always talked about creating the opportunity to live abroad with our family for a period of time. We believe one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a life full of opportunities and experiences so we are always seeking ways to have more epic experiences as a family! In the last year, our adventures have included Thailand, Mexico (Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Cozumel), Hawaii, Iceland, India, China, Canada, and driving all the way across the USA.

I am passionate about health and healing and am licensed as a massage therapist. I currently serve as the lead instructor for a massage therapy school where we live which I will be leaving in order to move to SMA. I have also trained as a midwife, yoga instructor, personal development mentor, and have learned more healing modalities than I can list.

For the last 10 years, David has been building a business in web development and business consulting. While David has always worked from home, we have decided to extend the meaning of “home” while we travel and he works so long as he has the internet. I have also migrated my business in Mentoring, Self-Development, and Healing online as I serve clients all over the world. Isn’t modern day technology amazing?! I’m blown away at the possibilities it affords us!

Together, David and I are also Certified Parenting Mentors and teach online as well as local, in-person classes through We absolutely love sharing with others the golden nuggets that we have gained through our journey!

While we have always prioritized traveling in our family (taking couples trips and family trips both internationally and within the USA) moving to San Miguel this fall will be a first for us in terms of “taking the leap” to actually live internationally as a family. We are open to the adventures that await us and plan on spending a couple of years slow-traveling the world. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll never want to stop!

We are so excited to meet other families who share the passion of travel and adventure at the Family Summit this year! Although we haven’t moved yet, I foresee one of the biggest challenges of Worldschooling to be finding “community” with other travelers. This seems the perfect opportunity to connect with others who have similar goals for themselves and their families so that we can collaborate on ideas and support one another in our dreams. Our children are a bit nervous to leave the home they have always known but we keep assuring them that they will make some AMAZING friends at the Summit this year in Mexico. We are looking forward to getting to know you and your family and embarking on a new adventure together!!
